type='text'>marketing genius!

it is now less than a week 'til christmas, and as such i spent my whole weekend out buying christmas presents. sam needed to buy a gift for his niece, so i suggested we go into valhalla because on top of being a card shop, it also has fab toys and children's books. sam successfully bought a toy character from 'where the wild things are', and, more relevantly to this here blog, i stumbled across this.

anyone that knows me knows that i am a pack rat (one of my friends found an x-ray of my teeth on a recent visit to my house among with my collection of tapes of early 90's music videos i store beneath my fish tank). some of the most important things i never throw out are my concert tickets.

since i bought the genius 'ticket stub diary' yesterday afternoon, i have spent all of my free time at home hunting through boxes and bags and drawers for all of my ticket stubs. i have so far found 57, including tickets for the cancelled '98 belle & sebastian gig that i was too lazy to get a refund for. as of right now, i have tickets from every year from 2000 onward, which was when i moved back to toronto permanently, so i think i have most from that time period. i have never purposefully thrown out a concert ticket (the only ones i know for sure are gone are from summer '97 to summer '98, when i lost my wallet. surprisingly, the niagara regional police got hold of my wallet 4 years later - minus the cash, of course - but my dad threw out everything paper that was in it before getting it back to me as he said it smelled, ah well), so with a little digging in the bottom of boxes in the back of my closet, i should be able to find everything back as far as '94. wheee! i'm looking forward to the hunt!

of course, while i'm searching for tickets, an awful lot of other stuff i should be doing just isn't getting done, such as wrapping presents, writing the last of my christmas cards that just won't get to their destination before christmas, and cleaning in preparation for my christmas houseguests that are arriving tomorrow evening.

now i'm wondering who of my friends is as anal about saving tickets as i am. hmmm...
monday, monday. so good to me.

as i was leaving my house this morning, i turned on my ipod, and the first song was 'happy' by the rolling stones. "what a perfect first song of the morning!" i thought to myself, and decided that this should be a day that i avoid hitting the skip button and take whatever my ipod gives me (on a normal day, i will skip forward until i hear 'regret', or 'woodstock', or whatever song i have decided is my favourite of the day). my dear sadie (that's my ipod's name) gave me a perfect commute mix, and it was mostly stuff i wouldn't have chosen myself:

Happy - The Rolling Stones
12:51 - The Strokes
Trains & itself for the encore, which meant that most of the set was filled with new material. new material from an as of yet unreleased album. i spent most of the show feeling lost.
the thing that i took away most from the show was that it reinforced for me that television are a musician's band. the strength of the show lay in their technical prowess, which was mostly wasted on me as a mostly non-musician. sure, watching richard lloyd play guitar is pretty awesome, but it was marred a bit by the dour face he had the whole show.
in fact, the entire band looked like they wanted to be anywhere else but on stage, which made it difficult to get excited despite how good the music sounded.

as my friends and i were leaving the venue, we were handed flyers by some dude, as is typical. except they weren't flyers...they were buzzcocks tickets! for the next night! we had just finished griping that the show was definitely now worth the $45 we had spent, and now we had something to make up for it!

next day

the three of us arrived at the venue less rushed and grumpy than we had been the day before (since the show was at 6, we had to leave straight from work and therefore didn't have dinner before beers and tunes). it was a really weird sensation, being in the exact same place, with the exact same people (including a lot of people i didn't know, who also had got free tickets the day before), at the exact same time two days in a row. but i digress. would i be disappointed again? not a chance!

they were amazing! it was the highest energy show that i had seen in ages. every song was played hard and fast, and the drummer kept playing in between songs, which only broke long enough for steve diggle to scream into the mic "ORGASM ADDICT!!", before hammering away at his guitar again. good old steve looked like he was having the best time of his life, jumping about, raising his guitar up in the air, shouting incomprehensible comments into his mic...plus, he had a smile on his face the entire time. pete shelley looked like he was having loads of fun as well, but just wasn't at manic.
possibly the whole thing only lasted about 40 minutes, including encore, but it was ok, 'cause they packed into that time i have no idea how many songs.
when the show was over, steve diggle took ages to leave the stage 'cause he just kept shaking everyone's hands. it was incredibly cute.

so the buzzcocks restored my faith in aging punk rockers. maybe it's 'cause the buzzcocks are drunken mancs, and television are arty new yorkers. for all i know, they could've played shows back to back at the el mo in '78, and the difference may have been exactly the same.

return to the blogosphere

i recently read nick hornby's "songbook", which prompted me to think about my own relationship with the music i listen to. as music is what i mostly know, and often all i want to talk about, coupled with the fact i often get asked of my opinion on certain music related subjects, i thought it might be fun to spew out my musical thoughts in blog-form.

this in no way will lead anyone to what is new and hip...there are a million other websites that do that. besides, that has never been my area of expertise. it will probably develop over time, but the topics that have been running through my head while riding the subway, or eating lunch the past couple of weeks have lists of songs, or albums, that i think are significant, at least to my life. there may be the occasional record review, but in a very non-traditonal sense, as i am in no way a writer, and structured writing both intimidates me and puts me off.

time to think up a topic for my first proper post. in the mean time, this is what i'm listening to now
